I like to write about what's on my mind. It often has something to do with bicycling.

Gas Powered Thing
This was locked near the back door at work, the other day (the bike, not the guy). It's a bike with a gas engine kit installed, making it a moped, I guess.
I love projects and modifying things, so this thing impresses me. The "silent sports" guy in me considers a gas engine on a bicycle an abomination. I solve this conflict with the understanding that this gas-powered bicycle is much better than a car and maybe the guy riding it will enjoy himself on his way to work. I also know that not everyone has my ability to ride a bike to work under my own power. Lots of people have physical shortcomings that prevent them from bicycling, but an assisted bicycle may work for them very well.
I'll stick with my human-powered machines for now.

Some guy left a comment on my blog with a link to his eBay site selling these engines. I spammed him because I didn't think the gas powered stuff was appropriate. But I guess I'd rather see this pass me than the H3 and H2 that almost took me out (on 2 separate occasions) today.
It's only a matter of time before the aftermarket guys get a hold of this engine and start selling hop-ups. Hi-flow air filters, bore and stroke kits, loud exhaust systems...pretty soon you'll have a 50hp machine with RST forks. And this will be fun to watch.
I still want one for my '56 Schwinn frame, just because I want that old-school Whizzer thing going on.
My biggest objection to those things is they're very, very noisy and because most people don't know jack about two stroke engines, they're belching smoke running on a 25:1 fuel/oil mix (instead of 50:1 using synthetic low smoke oil).
I hear what you're saying about not everyone being able to pedal a regular bicycle though (like us recovering busted hip people for example). In those cases, I'd suggest something like this is much nicer, though not as fast.
Personally, I'm desperate to get back on a regular bike.
I just had a vision of this mounted on my priceless Hiawatha cruiser.
Let's IED the prick.
I'll second Lemmiwinks's comment: these things are NO GOOD. I wouldn't be surprised if these things are worse, in terms of air pollution, than any big SUV, per mile. Of course, they don't usually go that far... anyway, why bother when there are good electric alternatives, and you can usually find a publicly accessible power outlet in a garage? I think this is a seriously overlooked resource.
