More Off-Topic Tips

If the topic of this blog is supposed to be something about bicycles, then this post is off topic.

I read a tip on http://lifehacker.com/ for getting to Gmail quickly: type g in the address bar of your browser and press Enter.

With that new knowledge, I tried to r for reader. That didn't work, but "reader" does. I tried b for blogger and that didn't work either, but "blogger" does. I'm a fan of keyboard shortcuts. It all started with WordPerfect for DOS. I think VI is pretty fun also, but I don't use it enough to retain the key commands very well.

you are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity - b. lightyear

vi is a way of life for me. When I have to work on text files on Windows servers, I dread using the sad, sad, little piece of cripplewear called Notepad.

You used to be able to create a DoS on a Windows server by loading a gig sized file with Notepad. I think it now just takes a long time to figure out it won't load.

One of my favorite keyboard shortcuts is control+enter. If you type the name of a website, such as yahoo, into the address bar and then hit control+enter it will add the "www." to the front and the ".com" to the end automatically.

It amazes non-technical people.

I adore vim (vi is for true retro grouches and will mostly be linked to vim anyway). If you're not using it enough, or you're starting out, grab yourself one of these

Love the "g" for gmail tip. Thanks!

vi, oh those were indeed the days! j and k have never been the same.

Favorite shortcuts:
shift-enter for print screen, to generate screen shot to paste into document.

In word, ctrl-+ for superscript, ctrl-= for subscript, ctrl-z for undo.

It seems anything can cause a DoS on Vista.

I mean, shift-Prnt Scrn for print screen, followed by Ctrl-v for paste. Why does Ctrl-v make sense for paste, proximity to 'c'?

Re: Ctrl-V for paste:

As it was explained to me (just after the earth cooled), the 'V' character points down, as "in put it here." Lame execuse -- I think Ctrl-P was taken for 'print' and they just decided to use the next letter in the group (Ctrl-X -> cut, Ctrl-C -> copy, Ctrl-V -> paste).

dWp is your friend...

DWP: the Duluth-Winnipeg-Pacific railway or the dissolved wafer process..

I've been trying various control and ALT combos, but I doubt I'm getting it: What is VI supposed to do??

vi is a text editor for unix. Works well for programming once the commands are resident in your reptile brain. More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vi

Here is a program 'WinVi' you can download. The programmer's main goal was 'compatability with Windows Notepad'.

A cow-orker of mine and someone who's up to his nipples in the Microsoft Kool-ade has switched his laptop from Vista to XP.

Even he says Vista sucks.

Vista must be worse than even I could imagine...

It's been my misfortune to encounter vista only a handful of times thus far (thankfully most corporate size places won't touch it with a ten foot pole). It's truly, utterly woeful. It beggars belief that anyone would willingly use it any longer than required to shutdown and format the hard drive in order to install something, anything useful.

This wouldn't have been the post that I would have predicted would receive 15+ comments.

People that comment on blogs are nerds. Who would have thought?!

Matt_J said...

So many comments-- it's because 'keyboard shortcuts' taps into the universal dream of discovering the one magical keystroke combination that will unlock new abilities in your computer that your coworkers never dreamed were possible. Like the time you first learned what a batch file was.

If you think batch files are good, you should try shell scripting. It's everything you ever wished you could do in a batch file and more.
